Day 7 - Adventures in Barcelona

Our first stop today was Antoni Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia Cathedral (Holy Family Cathedral). This is an Art Nouveau architectural style cathedral that has yet to be finished. The groundbreaking was in 1882 and it’s expected to be completed in 2026.  It is very different from cathedrals of medieval origins. It is very light and purposely uses color from stained glass in interesting ways.  It’s incredibly awe inspiring both inside an out.

Pictures do not do this cathedral justice. The colors are beautiful!  The interior columns soar to 90+ feet. It’s very light inside too, which is much different than the Baroque and Gothic cathedrals.

We took the metro and then hiked a hill to Parc Guell only to find out they were booked out and we couldn’t get in for another 90 minutes.  So with only one full day in Barcelona, we changed plans and decided to go to the Picasso art museum sooner.

We took a few pics of the city from the top of the park hill.

We found an empanada place for lunch. They were delicious!

We stumbled across a Kathe Wahlfart store. It is a German Christmas store we saw when we were in Germany in 2017. It was fun to wander around.

We went to the Picasso Museum. Most people only think of Picasso’s cubist works, but he tried many styles earlier in his life. These two paintings were done when he was just 15 years old.

Here is one of Picasso’s cubist pieces.

We had churros and hot chocolate (70% dark coco) with churros as a snack. Then found a place for dinner.

We walked about 7 miles today!

Barcelona is a cool city.  It definitely feels European, but it has a unique modern feel mixed in too. We really enjoyed it.

Tomorrow morning we fly to Seville for three days.
